Combating the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistant infectious diseases in Vietnam

Direct handing-on knowledge and experience on antibiotic use with review of real cases
to district hospital doctors and pharmacists

In 2022, the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in collaboration with many well experienced experts on infectious diseases and clinical pharmacy for adults and pediatrics from Bach Mai hospital, National pediatrics hospital, Hanoi Medicine University hospital, Hanoi University of Pharmacy, Viet Xo Friendship hospital, Can Tho Medicine and Pharmacy University hospital and Can Tho Hoan My hospital to provide onsite training for doctors and pharmacists at Hanoi and Ca Mau district hospitals. 

Training focused on treatment guidelines for common viral and bacterial infections, review of diagnosis and optimal choices of antibiotics, switch from injection to oral use and shorten hospitalization for current real individual cases at the hospitals. The optimal choices of specific antibiotics and switch from injection to oral use were practically based on availability of antibiotics at the district hospitals. 

The training was directly facilitated by those experts for all doctors and pharmacists at 12 district hospitals. 

  The case review and discussion of optimal choices of antibiotics were also conducted at individual clinical wards with high loads of patients such as internal medicines, ICU, obstetrics, pediatrics, infectious diseases to better address common infections at those wards to improve appropriate use of antibiotics. The constructive discussion was opened for clinical doctors and pharmacists from the district hospitals and the national experts to reach agreement on a consistent way to evaluate antibiotic prescriptions and optimal choices of antibiotics on evaluated cases.
