Audit – feedback strategy in district health facilities with participation of Australian team
Audit feedback is one of the key strategies in V-RESIST to support improving appropriate use of antibiotics at district hospitals. International and national experts of V-RESIST have worked together to locally adapt approach and NAPS (National Antimicrobial Prescribing Survey) tools, which was proven effectively in Australia and other countries, to Vietnam.
A team of national experts of infectious diseases and clinical pharmacy have received training on NAPS. The national expert team then has been providing training and coaching for doctors and clinical pharmacists of district health facilities in Hanoi and Ca Mau to help them self-assess the antibiotic use in their own facilities. The combination between external and internal audit feedback sessions allowed V-RESIST study to gain quality data, but at the same time, provide capacity building for health facilities to run their own antibiotic management program. The two-way discussion during feedback sessions allow health care professionals reach the agreement on appropriate antibiotic use.
In June 2022, Dr. Jaslyn Doshi, an international expert on infectious diseases, visited district hospitals in Hanoi and Ca Mau. During the trip, Dr Jaslyn Doshi worked with the national experts to review antibiotic prescriptions in district health facilities and provided feedback to doctors and pharmacists at district hospitals. This is valuable opportunities for both Dr. Jaslyn and the district hospital doctors and pharmacists to meet, discuss and evaluate antibiotic prescriptions and real antimicrobial issues together, and learn from each other.
During the trip, Dr Jaslyn Doshi also understood better about challenges of health care workers in Vietnam in their work. This would help V-RESIST team in both Australia and Vietnam to design interventions in the future to reduce antimicrobial resistance in Vietnam in general and in health care system specifically.
